Matthew Muir (3D) spent the Easter weekend in Holland playing for Nottingham Forest in their annual tour which sees teams from under 8 to under 14 level compete in two separate tournaments. Good Friday was the “Friendship Cup”, attended by over 50 teams from the UK, Holland, Germany and Belgium. The standard was very high, but Matthew’s under 8 team performed very well to win 3 and draw 2 of their 6 games, giving them the best record of any of the Forest teams.
Saturday and Sunday saw them playing up a year to be entered into an under 9s tournament, playing their own under 9s and 3 Dutch clubs on each day in a “home and away” format.
Despite narrowly losing to Forest under 9s on both days, Matthew’s team won 5 of the remaining 6 games to finish runners up, a fantastic achievement never before managed by the under 8s in the 16 years the tour has been arranged. With all the games very close, Matthew played his full part in the team’s achievements, and his personal highlight was a last minute penalty save to preserve a thrilling 2-1 victory!
Matthew’s next tournament for Forest will be the Pilgrim Cup, played at the Newark Showground on Saturday 6th May, where he is hoping to go one better than last years’ semi-final place. Good luck Matthew!
