Hard to believe that only a week ago I was a flâneur on the boulevards of Paris. A flâneur is one who strolls or saunters, exuding an air of leisure and aristocratic nonchalance. Originally your flâneur was a literary type from the nineteenth century, a connoisseur of the street. So there I was, wearing my new ‘red’ brogues (compulsory footwear for the dedicated flâneur) as I sauntered past Les Deux Magots, the famous café where Sartre and his cronies philosophized through Gauloises fumes, making tiny cups of espresso, or petits noirs, last all afternoon.
