Children at Lincoln Minster School start to learn Spanish in Explorers at the age of 4, continuing all the way through Prep in readiness for senior schooling. In Years 3–6 the children also start to learn French.
Our philosophy is to provide the children with fun, lively lessons where they can learn in a positive and enthusiastic environment. We strongly believe that if the lessons are fun, the children will learn and make progress.
In Pre-Prep the emphasis is on speaking, playing games, singing songs and reading short simple stories. As the children progress through to Prep site they are encouraged to use dictionaries to find their own independent phrases to develop both their conversational and writing skills.
The children learn about the culture not just of Spain (including the Spanish Civil War) but also of Peru discovering Machu Picchu, one of the wonders of the world. The children are given opportunities to listen to authentic native speakers and use authentic resources from France and Spain to improve their reading skills.
In Year 6 the children go to Paris and the highlight of their trip is to visit their French penfriends in Senlis.
Within our school we have a rich diversity of languages spoken amongst our children at home. These children are encouraged to lead a Languages day (so far we have covered Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Italian, Polish and Portuguese) to present information about an aspect of culture and teach some basic conversational phrases.
