A chance to discover, explore, enjoy and delight!

The St Mary's Preparatory School Lower School comprises Years 1 to 3. It is a wonderful place for children to continue their learning journey and builds on the solid foundations laid in EYFS - a chance to discover, explore, enjoy and delight! Children thrive as they move through the Lower School in Years 1, 2 and 3, with teachers who are passionate about teaching, learning and enthusing their pupils.

High yet achievable expectations are set for children on an individual basis and we place great emphasis on finding each child's range of abilities and building on all areas of their learning to give them an all-round, balanced, exciting education. Continuing to engage children in their learning, challenging them, encouraging them to think for themselves, offering ideas, helping them to learn from first-hand experiences and see mistakes as opportunities to find the right answers are all crucial in these years.

We also focus on developing independence in everyday life-skills and becoming more independent learners, and we ask parents to support us in our endeavours in this area.

Each child in theUpper School is assigned a form teacher, giving them a strong pastoral link for their everyday needs. At these ages children are starting to see themselves in relation to their peers which can be a fragile time for some. At the Lower School we make sure to provide the encouragement and scaffolding children require to develop positive self-esteem, to be proud of their individual achievements and to encourage and support others as needed.
