We believe that every child can enjoy drama
Drama at Lincoln Minster School is taught within a vibrant, supportive environment. The ethos of the department is built around the conviction that every child, whatever their ability or natural aptitude, should be able to enjoy Drama. The emphasis is not on being 'the best actor' but on working within a group, sharing ideas with confidence, learning to evaluate and to respond positively to constructive advice, improving focus and working independently. These are all highly transferable skills and will inform and complement your child's education across the school.
Curriculum
In Years 7-9, Drama is taught through once-weekly lessons of 70 minutes. All lessons are structured and balanced to provide experience using a wide range of skills and techniques; these are drawn from concepts, eg symbolism, historical stimuli such as the Evacuation in WW2 and issue-based Drama. We aim to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and empathy - and above all, to have fun!
Many of our students choose to take Drama and Theatre Studies as a GCSE and A-level option, and learn to respond to theory and text as actors, directors and designers. At this level, lessons occur four times a week, and analytical and creative faculties are honed and stretched. Our growing numbers are a testament to the success of the subject; in 2011, our GCSE students achieved 100% A*-C, with 64% at A and A*, and our A-level students also achieved 100% pass rate A*-C at Year 13.
The quality of practical work at GCSE, AS and A2 is superb, and showcases the confidence and maturity of our students. The process of attaining this quality begins with the first day in Year 7, and continues as each student grows in experience.
One of our most recent success stories
Year 13 student and Head Pupil Eliza Butterworth has beaten off competition from 3000 other applicants worldwide, to be offered one of only 28 places studying towards a BA (Hons) in Acting, at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, arguably the most prestigious Drama School in the country. To gain this fabulous opportunity, Eliza had to go through four rounds of auditions, during which she has had to perform both classical and contemporary monologues, sing and take part in a variety of intensive workshops.
Since joining LMS at the age of three, Eliza has performed on the Senior School stage in many productions, ranging from the 999 Revue in Year 9, to leading roles in Guys and Dolls, The Crucible, West Side Story and Pillars of the Community. She will take up her place at RADA in September 2011 after completing her A levels.
Congratulations, Eliza - we look forward to seeing you at the BAFTAS!
