Year 8 pupil sailing her way to Level 3

RYA sailing logbook

Faye attended an RYA Dinghy Sailing course in the summer and is setting her sights on Level 4.

The course took place at Whitwell Watersports at Rutland Water and taught a range of skills including a good understanding of wind and sails, sailing a dinghy single-handedly and capsizing – which Faye did around 20 times!

The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Level 3 qualification is the ticket to sailing allowing Faye to take a dinghy out alone or with untrained crew.

Faye enjoyed the experience, she said:

The next level, level 4, is all about racing…

“It was great fun. although it was so cold one day that I put on two wetsuits! The best part was hanging right out of the boat, my back horizontal to the water, holding on just with the foot strap, leaning the boat and using the wind to get as much speed as possible… it is such a cool feeling!”

The next course – Level 4 – is all about racing, so watch this space!
