New Programme for 2023

The tourism industry in the UK is growing and is of major importance to the economy. The course will allow students to investigate local, national and global tourist destinations as well as developing an understanding of the importance of customer service within the industry.

The course allows students to develop a range of employability skills including critical thinking, collaborative working, self-presentation, adaptability, self-management and communication. In some units, students will have the opportunity to undertake real or simulated activities from within the industry.

The tourism industry is dynamic, wide ranging and fast-growing, and it offers a huge variety of employment opportunities for young people. Students studying the course have previously gone on to study a range of higher education courses including Hotel Management, Event Management and International Tourism both in this country and overseas.

The units are taught through a variety of teaching methods including industry speakers, trips to local tourist attractions and students own research. The department use a wide variety of resources including text books, video resources and some internet sites.

Assessment

Exam Board: WJEC Applied Diploma in Tourism

The World of Tourism (Written examination): 1hr 30 minutes, 34% overall marks
Global Destinations (Controlled Assessment Style): Two weeks research, three hours write up, 25% overall marks.
Managing the Customer Experience (Coursework): 25% overall marks
Visitor Attractions (Coursework): 16% overall marks

Course Requirements

There are no specific requirements in terms of GCSE qualifications but the course does require extensive extended writing for the coursework and therefore students should have a grade 4/grade C in their GCSE English. Students must be willing to dedicate a lot of time to completing coursework in their study periods. They must also ensure that they are prepared to meet deadlines which are set by the exam boards.

Facilities

Our Sixth Form students have access to their own Common Room, Resources Centre and Silent Study Suite, where they socialise and relax, find books or speak to our Careers team, and complete their studies in peace (respectively).

As part of their studies, students may also have access to the dedicated art, photography and graphic design studio, purpose-built Recital Hall for musical performances, fully-equipped drama studio as well as indoor and outdoor sporting facilities.
