At Lincoln Minster School, our scholarships recognise exceptional talent and individual potential. They are awarded to pupils who demonstrate aptitude and passion in specific areas, enabling them to develop their strengths, flourish academically and contribute positively to the wider school community.


Our scholarship programme enables talented pupils to develop in subjects where they show outstanding ability and enthusiasm. Scholars play an active role in the community of Lincoln Minster School, representing and championing their area of scholarship.

Scholarships are offered at entry to Years 7, 9 and 12 for both existing pupils and external applicants.

Academic

Academic Scholarships at Lincoln Minster School


Academic scholarships are awarded every year for students who demonstrate an extremely high level of academic achievement and who we believe will make a significant contribution to the life of the school. Successful applicants are expected to be role models for other students and maintain the highest academic standards across all subjects.

The school expects scholars to have a full and active participation in school events and competitions and represent the school in both regional and national academic events when selected to do so. The scholarships are usually awarded up to the end of Year 13, but contributions are reviewed annually: continuity of scholarship is dependent on sustained effort and attainment.

Art

Art Scholarships at Lincoln Minster School


Art Scholarships applications are invited from pupils who show outstanding artistic ability and commitment to the subject.

Candidates will be asked to provide a portfolio of artwork showing their development over a period of years. Specific details of expected portfolio content are listed in accordance with the expected year of entry. Portfolios are submitted in advance and evaluated by our Head of Art.

Candidates who show potential will be invited to spend time in the Art Department, where they will complete a variety of Art-based tasks. For external candidates, a reference will be requested from the applicant's current Headteacher. Awards are made taking all of the above into account.

Drama

Drama Scholarships at Lincoln Minster School


Becoming a Drama Scholar at Lincoln Minster School is about more than performance. We value team work, commitment , high standards of behaviour, consistent effort , meeting deadlines, and active participation in co-curricular Drama.

Our ethos is inclusive and collaborative, focusing on passion for the subject rather than the “main role”. As Stanislavski said, “There are no small parts, only small actors.”

We welcome actors and designers alike, including lighting, sound, set and costume, who bring enthusiasm, professionalism and a willingness to learn.

Scholars are expected to lead by example in lessons and productions. The first term is a probationary period, with progress reviewed regularly by the Head of Drama. Scholarships are reviewed annually and depend on sustained effort and full participation throughout a student’s time at the school.

Music

Music

Music Scholarships at Lincoln Minster School


The Music Department at Lincoln Minster School nurtures a lifelong love of music through a broad curriculum and rich co-curricular programme. Scholars develop strong musicianship alongside key skills such as team work, communication, problem-solving and aural awareness.

Outstanding facilities include specialist classrooms, 10 practice rooms and a 200-seat recital hall. Music scholars benefit from extensive performance opportunities, workshops and concerts, including performances at Lincoln Cathedral.

Scholars are challenged through differentiated lessons and are encouraged to progress to GCSE and A-level Music. Specialist support is available for those aiming for Higher Education or Conservatoire study.

Former scholars have gone on to study at leading conservatoires and universities, pursuing careers in performance, composition, conducting and music technology.

Sports Scholarships at Lincoln Minster School


Sports scholarships are offered to pupils who demonstrate the potential for exceptionally high levels of achievement and who we believe will make a significant contribution to the life of the school.

Sport and Physical Education are an important part of school life. With excellent on-site facilities and access to local sports clubs, our teams compete regularly at local, regional and national level. We are passionate about nurturing the sporting talent of tomorrow.

Our Sports Scholarship Programme offers pupils access to specialist coaching and conditioning, tailored training programmes, mentoring, sports psychology, performance analysis, nutritional guidance, physiotherapy and injury rehabilitation, alongside agency and club links and an understanding of wider sporting theory.

Entrance Day Format

Tuesday 20 January 2026

Our Entrance Day offers pupils a welcoming introduction to life at Lincoln Minster School while also providing an opportunity for academic assessment. The day combines enjoyable team building activities with CAT4 testing and an academic paper. These help us to set pupils appropriately (currently only in Maths) and to establish a benchmark for tracking their progress throughout their time at LMS.

Candidates for an Academic Scholarship are expected to be among the highest overall achievers in the academic assessments completed during the day.

Who can apply for a scholarship at Lincoln Minster School?

Scholarships are open to both current and external applicants entering Years 7, 9 and 12.

What types of scholarships are available?

We offer Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport scholarships.

When can I apply for a scholarship?

Applications open on Wednesday 8 October 2025 for 2026–2027 entry. Deadlines vary by year group, so please check the relevant section above.

How much is a scholarship worth?

Our average scholarship award is 5%, though they can go up to 25% in exceptional circumstances

Can a pupil hold more than one scholarship?

A pupil may hold an Academic Scholarship alongside one other area, such as Music or Sport. Combined Scholarship and Bursary awards are capped at 50%.

How long do scholarships last?

Scholarships are reviewed annually but normally continue through to the completion of A-Levels, subject to continued effort and performance as set out in the Scholarship offer letter.

How are scholarship assessments carried out?

Assessments vary by discipline and may include tests, auditions, portfolios and interviews, depending on the scholarship applied for.

Are bursaries the same as scholarships?

No. Scholarships recognise talent and achievement, while bursaries provide means-tested financial support for families who need assistance with fees.

How much financial help can a bursary provide?

The maximum funding level for our bursary programme is 50%, but most awards are lower. The level of any award will be based on your financial circumstances.

Who assesses bursary applications?

All bursary assessments are carried out independently by Bursary Administration Ltd (BAL) to ensure fairness and confidentiality.

Do bursaries need to be renewed each year?

Yes. Awards are reassessed annually, usually in April, to reflect any changes in family circumstances.

How do I apply for a bursary?

You’ll need to apply for a place at Lincoln Minster School first, indicate your intention to apply for a bursary, and contact the Admissions Manager for the latest form and guidance.
