Celebrating the Guiding Principles That Shape Our Pupils

By Mr Coupland, Headteacher, Lincoln Minster Preparatory School

I love seeing our pupils grow, not just in their learning, but as confident, thoughtful, and kind individuals. At Lincoln Minster Prep School, we focus on making sure every child feels safe, valued, and supported, and it’s amazing to see how much that encourages them to take risks, try new things, and enjoy learning. When children feel safe, valued, and encouraged to be themselves, the impact on their learning and wellbeing is remarkable, and it underpins the strong academic success we see across the school.

Some of the most meaningful moments occur in the routine interactions of school life. Pupils demonstrate our guiding principles of Ready, Respectful, Safe simply by taking responsibility in lessons, being considerate towards others, and engaging thoughtfully with their learning. These everyday behaviours foster a positive school culture and help children develop collaboration, resilience, and confidence.

We also celebrate these moments through initiatives like Minster Money. Seeing children recognised for showing kindness, thoughtfulness, or responsibility is brilliant. But more than the tokens themselves, it’s the conversations they spark that really matter. Pupils notice that their actions are appreciated, and it encourages them to take pride in what they contribute to our school community.

Pastoral care is key to all of this. Knowing each child individually means we can support them socially, emotionally, and academically. Pupils gain confidence in being themselves, learn to work well with others, and grow in resilience, all while discovering new interests and talents along the way.

Other moments stay with me because they are entirely unplanned. A child might show unexpected kindness or step forward to support a peer without prompting, and these gestures bring our guiding principles to life in ways that are vivid and memorable. They remind me why nurturing care, respect, and confidence is just as important as academic achievement.

At Lincoln Minster, my aim is simple: every child should feel they belong, understand that kindness and respect matter, and leave school with the confidence, curiosity, and love of learning that will stay with them long after they walk out of the classroom.
