Lincoln Minster School: Making Waves with British Rowing

Our rowing programme has rapidly transformed from a fun co-curricular option into a thriving, competitive sport—propelled by student ambition, community support, and an exciting new partnership with British Rowing.

The school is now part of British Rowing’s national outreach initiative, Project Rowing, a flagship programme designed to introduce rowing to new schools across England.

At the core of this growth is a team that began the year with only 11 student rowers. That number has since tripled, with over 30 students now training regularly in both Junior and Senior performance squads. Training sessions are held at Lincoln Rowing Centre (LRC), where students develop their skills both in the gym and on the water. The team’s dedication has quickly turned heads. What started as a bold idea soon evolved into a serious venture, with a need for proper kit, they took fundraising into their own hands by rowing the 120-mile equivalent from Lincoln to Big Ben on indoor rowing machines.

Each student rowed an exhausting 2.5-hour session, cheered on by peers and staff alike. The rhythmic sounds of the machines, the encouraging atmosphere, and the team’s relentless spirit created an unforgettable day. Their efforts were rewarded with over £2,370 raised, funding a new rowing kit.

But this is just the beginning.

Our partnership with British Rowing, the University of Lincoln, and Lincoln Rowing Centre is now helping to develop this passion into performance. Students benefit from expert coaching, access to competitive events, and mentorship from seasoned rowers. The initiative also aims to support broader character development—instilling discipline, teamwork, and a sense of belonging.

“Our aims as a team are to represent our school and Lincoln Rowing Club while competing in fixtures and competitions” said student Elliot S. “More importantly, we want to learn, grow, and build something lasting.”

British Rowing praised Lincoln Minster School’s “whole-school commitment” to the sport, highlighting its inclusive approach and strong ties with local institutions as key reasons for its success.

As the programme continues to grow, the school is setting its sights on regional and national competitions. But at its heart, the focus remains on learning, growing, and building a legacy.

With the support of British Rowing and the wider Lincoln community, Lincoln Minster School is proving that with vision, teamwork, and a little grit, even the boldest dreams can take flight!
